KZMU is a community radio station in Moab, Utah, a local institution that’s been on the air for decades, supporting live streaming, local programming, fundraising campaigns, and a deeply engaged community of listeners and volunteers.
The site came to me in rough shape. It had been passed through multiple contributors over the years, each using different page builders, plugins, and styles, resulting in layout conflicts, inconsistent branding, and a backend that was difficult for anyone to maintain. A significant part of the project was auditing and cleaning up the environment before rebuilding.
I worked from client-provided design comps to rebuild the site with a custom WordPress theme, restructuring content across program schedules, news, events, and donation campaigns. The goal was a site that not only looked better but was genuinely sustainable: one where non-technical staff could manage their own updates without dev support.
What I did
- Used client-provided design comps to guide layout and structure, including restructuring content for program schedules, news, events, donation campaigns, and community pages
- Built and deployed the site through local development and staging environments, managing production launch and domain transition
- Created structured backend workflows, categories, and reusable content templates to enable non-technical staff to manage updates independently
- Integrated live audio streaming and built a dedicated “Listen Now” experience for users
- Implemented fundraising flows and newsletter signup integrations
- Improved content discoverability through better organization, navigation, and searchable archives
- Resolved mobile layout issues and ensured responsive behavior across devices
- Provided ongoing post-launch support, including UI updates and SCF feature requests
